Personal side of bias, Prejudice and Oppression
WK6
My friend and I went to one of the
local shopping center to look for shoes for my son wedding. We went to the mall,
walked around looking for the shoes that I wanted. As we look we went for the store to store. One of the store that we went into as so as we
walk through the door the sale person can up to us and as can we help. But I do
not know what I wanted, so I say no I am just looking. Then she walked away. Then another sales person can up and ask the
same thing. I said no thank you I just
looking I do not see what I want right not. This sale lady walks over to the
other lady, and they stood by the counter and watch us. We walk around the
store and everywhere we went we could see the ladies standing nearby. Although,
there was other customer in the store the two ladies stay close to us and keep
looking at us. This made us feel as if the ladies were watching us as if we
would take something. My friend and I got the same feeling as we walked around
the store. We could hear the ladies
talking about us as if we were not going to make any purchase and make a bet to
the effect. The two ladies discuss us as if we were not there. The ladies prejudice
us as being non shopper and wanted to take merchandise. This make us feel anger
and uncomfortable. Incident like this
used to happen so often in the past but today we thought things had change, but
in some area this still happen to us. To
change this company should train the sales person to understand the personal
profiling.
Katherine, I am sorry that you had to endure such an uncomfortable and upsetting experience. Racial profiling is a huge problem in our society which targets certain ethnic groups. When that same thing happened to me, I became frustrated and approached the sales people. I explain to them how uncomfortable it is to be watched in such a manner and stated that I was going to file a complaint. I also helped the to realize that while they are watching me, others can be cleaning them out.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing such a powerful experience.
Katherine, I am sorry that you had to experience such a painful and emotional experience. The sad thing about your experience is that racial profiling is a reality in our society targeting certain ethnic groups. I have had similiar experiences before and now will approach the workers by letting them know how uncomfortable it is to be the only person in the store being watched in such a manner. I also bring it to their attention that while they are watching me, someone else could be cleaning them out.
